Puppies play a lot and sleep a lot.

Both are critical for their physical and social development.

The sleep should be obvious but play not so much.

The more you or someone plays with a puppy the more likely it will develop into a happy adult dog.

    Puppy Play and Socialization

Since socialization and play are so important we always like to raise two puppies together and the older we get the more we appreciate playing with puppies which are already half played out.

Puppy play can be rough, very rough and some people mistake this for fighting. Puppies don’t fight, they play rough. It can also look as if one of them is usually on top and winning but the second the dominant one breaks off in these pictures the smaller one immediately grabs a hind leg and starts the battle over again.

    When Play Gets Rough

An occasional yelp is to be expected, it is how the biting dog learns when enough is too much.

Without rough play the puppies would never learn this critical lesson.
The workouts also give them the exercise they need to develop strong muscles and bone.

But we’re all friends in the end.

    Puppies Play and Sleep Together

No matter how violently they go at each other or scream in each others’ faces, about midnight, they get off our bed and share a Vari Kennel.

In the middle of a “fight” one is likely to wander off and the other one invariably gets a toy and teases her with it.

An occasional puppy class isn’t half the education of two puppies growing up together.
